![]() The Last of Us Part 2 players will also get a chuckle out of a scene where Sarah and Joel sit down to watch Curtis and Viper 2, a movie absent from the first game but namechecked as Joel’s favorite in the second. We spend ample time with Sarah, allowing Joel’s future interactions with Ellie to contrast more sharply, and we also get to know the neighbors who first introduce us to the game’s pandemic and see a bit of pre-pandemic life. The Last of Us boasts one of the best openings in video games, and the TV show expands it by detailing what happens in the day preceding that night-time opening. Nobody would have to do much thinking to draw a connection between characters masking up to prevent infection and our own reality, but don’t we want to have to do at least a little bit of thinking? The Intro and the Boston Quarantine Zone (Episode 1) ![]() Nobody would believe the physics-defying spores that don’t expand beyond set borders on TV (isn’t it weird how opening a door or even a protruding hole in a wall or ceiling never led to expansion?) anyway, but, as noted above, The Last of Us is not concerned with our current pandemic, but with the next one. Masks would make for an easy parallel to our own pandemic, but this change is for the better. ![]() This one has been making the rounds online ahead of the show's debut: There are no spores in HBO’s The Last of Us. Bush positioning recent American governance as a natural precursor to a world of summary executions, saturation bombing, quarantine zones, and black market ration card trading. Our present is no longer the onset of the pandemic but its endemic stage, and the totalitarian FEDRA is now openly discussed as fascist, with visual references to Operation Desert Storm and then-president George W. In the show, the pandemic breaks out in 2003, with most of the show taking place in 2023. The video game opens in 2013, the same year it was released, but takes place mostly in 2033. In that event, he concludes, “we lose.”Įarth loses a bit faster on TV. Of course, he notes, a cordyceps fungus that can take over the body of an insect can’t survive at the temperature of a human body, but if the earth were to “get a few degrees warmer,” its survival might dictate that it evolve to do so. ![]() With clear echoes of the COVID-19 pandemic, the first of them warns of increased air travel enabling a mutated supervirus to spread easily, and if the contradiction of the other expert dismissing just viral illness to warn instead about fungi seems like cheap irony, it turns around. The show opens in 1968, with two infectious disease experts discussing with a TV journalist the possibility of global pandemics. The nature of the infection itself has been reworked to have overt contemporary analogues. There are also too many examples of condensing and abridging gameplay segments to list all such instances (the much calmer escape and a sacrifice in Episode 2 will give an idea of what to expect), but here are some of the larger changes viewers can expect to see-and we will keep this list updated as the show continues through its first season. Where the game was locked into Joel’s point-of-view for all but a brief segment-meaning we see what he sees-the show takes a more omniscient one, showing us what other characters are up to and treating us to numerous flashbacks throughout its nine episodes. Rather than constantly prolonging the next story beat with excitement, TV tends to focus on context and backstory, and there’s plenty of backstory to go around with The Last of Us. Don’t expect this 9-hour series to find Joel and Ellie wheeling carts around to hop fences or fighting off Clickers every time they need to get from one place to another-Joel kills exactly one baddie with his giant arms, and it’s not an infected one. While HBO’s The Last of Us is true to the game, those who have played it can look forward to differences, if not surprises. We can almost imagine an HBO-style tagline: “It’s not Detective Pikachu. It’s exactly the sort of premise (serious, with contemporary overtones) and thematic material (both formats take on grief, hope, and parenthood) that you would expect more from cable TV than a Sonic game. The game, whose acclaim rests primarily with its narrative, was written and directed by Neil Druckmann (who, along with Chernobyl 's Craig Mazin, serves as showrunner for the adaptation) and follows a smuggler named Joel (Troy Baker in the game, Pedro Pascal in the show) as he ventures across the country with a teen girl (Ashley Johnson/Bella Ramsey) who might be the key to a cure to a fungal pandemic that has turned the world into an apocalyptic wasteland.

Major contributors of Twitter, regarding the removal of the block, said that if such a feature were to be removed, Twitter would violate the App Store and Google Play Store policies. In response to backlash from anti-bullying activists received for removing the feature, chief executive Linda Yaccarino also stated that a new form of "Block" and "Mute" is currently being developed by X Corp. Musk suggested that a stronger version of "Mute" would replace the "Block" function. On August 19, 2023, Elon Musk posted a tweet on Twitter stating that the "Block" feature would be deleted on the platform, with the exception of direct messaging. Yaccarino also went on to say that if you had stayed with Twitter, then changes would only be "incremental" and that with X, they think about "what's possible". Yaccarino also opened up on the reasoning behind Twitter's "controversial" name change to X, wherein she stated that the rebranding was essentially a "liberation" from Twitter. In August 2023, CEO Linda Yaccarino stated that she has "operational autonomy" under owner Elon Musk to run the business, and that she's involved in everything that goes into running the company. Inspectors were twice denied roof access, and the city cited the company for a building code violation. 24 complaints were filed by neighbors concerned about the bright flashing light and structural integrity. This was later increased to a value of $27 billion by July, and up to about $28.5 billion by the end of August. Īt the end of May 2023, Fidelity Investments estimated the company's value at $15 billion. Yaccarino succeeded Musk on June 5, 2023. Musk said he will transition his role to executive chairman and chief technology officer. The next day, on May 12, he named Linda Yaccarino as the new CEO, adding that she "will focus primarily on business operations, while I focus on product design & new technology". According to Musk, Twitter would accelerate the creation of X by "3 to 5 years". The concept for X solidified in October 2022, when Musk tweeted that acquiring Twitter is "an accelerant to creating X, the everything app". Musk reaffirmed his support for the name "X" in December 2020, replying to a Twitter user who renewed calls for Musk to form a new holding company under that name, although he dismissed the idea of X acquiring his businesses. In July 2017, Musk reacquired the domain X.com, for an undisclosed amount, from PayPal. Musk considered forming a holding company named "X" for Tesla, Inc. In March 2000, X.com merged with competitor Confinity to create PayPal. The name "X" dates back to X.com, an online bank co-founded by Musk in 1999. A third entity would then help take on a US$13 billion loan provided by various large banks to acquire Twitter. According to the filings, one of the entities was to merge with Twitter, Inc., while another was to serve as the parent company of the newly merged company. Rotating mounts for desktop displays are very common, though it's rare I see anyone else's in anything but landscape. Laptop PCs have those, but phones and tablets can be freely rotated and are most commonly used in a portrait orientation. I also disagree with his claim that "nowadays we’re surrounded by rigid landscape screens". Ultimately, I don't think the author has done his homework here because he doesn't address elements of photographic composition beyond "fill the frame" even to dismiss them. (Standard disclaimer about this not being a scientific method goes here) Interestingly the first result for "most famous painting" is a squarish landscape: Starry Night. A Google image search for "most famous photograph" also returned a portrait as the first result: Afghan Girl. It's no surprise that humans are more interested in portraits of humans than images of most anything else we're a social species. The term "portrait orientation" comes from this fact and indeed, the author's example of the Mona Lisa is a portrait. This is a standard approach for portraits, which are typically of humans posed in a sitting or standing position such that they're taller than they are wide. ![]() The author seems to be advocating the photographic composition technique of filling most of the frame with the primary subject without discussing photographic composition in general. It is both a technical and artistic choice and if a ‘newbie’ decides to only shoot landscape, they aren’t somehow disappointingly restricted.Īlso, if you want to landscape the Mona Lisa, you’d do better to add to the width than to chop off the height. Further, convoluting what is comfortable to look at with full detail for reading versus what replicates the human field of vision is as contrived as the smug reference of anyone who does otherwise as a ‘newbie.’Ī portrait mode image is a decision, and it should be a decision made with intent. There are scrolls, frescos, cave paintings, woven works and more that are wider than they are tall. Also ridiculous is the casual hand waving survey of historic mediums and deciding that ‘portrait mode’ reigned large. Often the viewfinder would provide guides for both orientations.Ĭalling a more vertical representation ‘portrait mode’ when speaking of stone tablets or bibles is a bit ridiculous. ![]() Plenty of medium format cameras used square shaped areas of film negative and you were meant to adjust the aspect by cropping. ![]() I think that's a rather myopic take though that doesn't consider the many factors that go into a cinematic viewing experience! I've noticed quite a bit of gatekeeping around this topic in filmmaking circles - people love to act as though horizontal is an innately superior format somehow, and that vertical is only suitable for childish, amateur productions. I don't know if there will ever be vertical movie theaters (I personally doubt it), but that doesn't mean that there can't be vertical movies that are ever bit as artistically valid and "sophisticated" as their horizontal counterparts! This has led to the dawn of vertical cinema, something I find very exciting. Landscape has always been an interesting debate to me, especially in the context of filmmaking, a space where, until the advent of TikTok, basically everyone scoffed at the idea of cinema being vertical - because, well, physical cinema screens are landscape! But cinema screens are no longer the dominant place people go for movie entertainment - they watch instead on their smartphones, where they can choose either orientation as they please. ![]() 30 days) or when storage space is running low. First Class is set in the 60's, and uses the Cuban Missile Crisis as the film's climatic sequence. Something the new trilogy of X-Men films does incredibly well is use the decade the films are set in to enhance the overall story they were going for. Much like the film itself, McAvoy and Fassbender put their own spin on the characters, but bring enough similarity in their performance to understand the connective tissue between the pairs. Perhaps, some would say that the two of them have outdone their counterparts, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan (I, myself being one of those people). I don't think we could have dreamed of a better pairing to take over the roles of Professor X and Magneto than James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender. Luckily, casting was something 20th Century Fox had no problem with. Setting an X-Men film in the 1960's meant having to recast all of the recurring characters. Vaughn does a wonderful job balancing the two. But there's something to be said for a mutant story that poses similar thought provoking questions and themes like before, while also making a fun adventure out of it. The original X-Men trilogy took itself very seriously and rightfully so. Up to this point, I liked most of the X-Men films, but even the people who have loved the series would say that there wasn't much "fun" to be had. In large part, the strengths of the film lie with Matthew Vaughn's direction. Even though the continuity has since been mingled with even more, this film did such a great job of resetting the universe without tarnishing what came before. There are a lot of great things about First Class, but I think the one that sticks out to me the most (even after years and tons of viewings) is that it works as both a reboot and prequel.
